Project Tomorrow and ClassDojo for Districts

The Family Engagement Disconnect:

Leaders think 80% of families are satisfied, but only 56% say they are.

See how you can close the gap in this new research report.

Why family engagement matters now

Districts are under pressure from every direction. Enrollment is declining as families have more options. Chronic absenteeism nearly doubled during the pandemic and remains well above pre-pandemic levels. And only 43% of Americans give their local public schools an A or B grade, down from 53% in 2013.**PDK Poll, 2025

Strong family ties move the needle

Districts can regain ground by building stronger family relationships. Decades of research link family engagement to better attendance, higher achievement, and higher graduation rates. District leaders agree: 81% say family engagement raises academic performance.

The Family Engagement Disconnect draws on Project Tomorrow’s 2025–26 Speak Up surveys of 1,760 K-12 district administrators and 3,931 families, plus interviews with 20 district leaders nationwide, representing nearly 1.4 million students across 108 districts. Project Tomorrow produced the report in collaboration with ClassDojo for Districts.
